On the other hand, if you’ve got time, let’s dive deep and find out which MTG booster boxes are the best to buy and why.

The Newest MTG Booster Box: Dominaria United

Dominaria United Draft Booster Box

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

Usually, one of the best MTG booster boxes to buy is the newest one. You (or the person that you’re buying the box for) probably don’t own many of the cards, and they are typically quite popular.

The newest set is Dominaria United, and it was released on September 9th, 2022. This is a return to the original Magic plane of Dominaria. It’s a very popular plane, and it offers a lot of that pure MTG flavor.

On top of that, it’s one of the best draft formats in recent years. You can draft all sorts of decks, from the very aggressive token strategies to slower, five color domain decks. So if you want to both draft, and open some new Magic cards, this is certainly the perfect MTG booster box for you.

Upcoming MTG Booster Box: The Brothers’ War

Brothers' War Set Booster Box

Number of booster packs: 30 per box

If you want the newest booster box, you should also check the release date for the next set, as it might be just around the corner, and you might rather preorder that one.

The next set is called the Brother’s War and its release date is November 18th, 2022. The set depicts an event from Magic’s past, a war between the two brothers Urza and Mishra. Early Magic fans will probably remember these two, as they were two of the most powerful characters in the lore.

Besides the regular cards that this set has, it’ll also bring us Retro frame iconic artifacts from the Magic’s past. There’s also a special collaboration with the Transformers in this set. This means that both Set and Collector boosters will have a chance of containing one of the new MTG Transformer cards.

The booster box pictured above is a Set booster box, which has more exciting cards, but isn’t meant for drafting. If you want to draft, you should pick up the Brothers’ War Draft booster box instead.

Iconic Cards

Since we don’t know the full cards list from the Brothers’ War just yet, this section isn’t complete just yet. However, there are some Brothers’ War spoilers available, and both brothers, Urza and Mishra are among them, and they will certainly be iconic.

These two are actually combined from two Magic cards each, thanks to the meld mechanic. Here are the two that make Urza, Planeswalker, when they’re flipped around:

Best MTG Booster Box for Commander: Double Masters 2022

Double Masters 2022 Draft Booster Box

Number of booster packs: 24 per box

Are you an avid Commander player? If so, look no further – Double Masters 2022 is the best MTG booster box for you.

Here is the weird thing, though. Commander Legends 2: Battle for Baldur’s Gate released just a month before Double Masters 2022. The name would suggest that it will be an amazing set for Commander. However, it was just okay. You can still get a Baldur’s Gate booster box if you’d like, as it does have mostly new cards, which are meant for Commander – albeit not the most powerful ones.

Double Masters 2022, on the other hand, contains only reprints. Nevertheless, a lot of cards (mostly rares, but other rarities too) are amazing for Commander. There are also some other cards that are used in other formats, which makes this booster box incredible, even if you just want to get lots of valuable cards.

You’ll note that the price of these booster box is a bit higher, but keep in mind that each booster comes with at least two rares in it.

MTG Booster Box With Multicolored Cards: New Capenna

New Capenna Draft Booster Box

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

If you like multicolored cards, then this is a nice option for you. New Capenna is the newest set that focused on five three color factions:

  • Obscura Operation (White, Blue, Black)
  • Maestros Massacre (Blue, Black, Red)
  • Riveteers Rampage (Black, Red, Green)
  • Cabaretti Cacophony (Red, Green, White)
  • Bedecked Brokers (Green, White Blue)

This means that if you like any of these three color combinations, you’ll probably be able to find some useful cards in the New Capenna boosters.

MTG Booster Box With Strongest Cards: Modern Horizons 2

Modern Horizons 2 Draft Booster Box

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

Sometimes you just want to get lots of powerful cards, right? In that case, Modern Horizons 2 is a great booster box for you. It contains more powerful cards than your average booster. (The previously mentioned Double Masters 2022 is also a great option.)

The set was made especially for Modern, one of the most powerful formats. That’s why you can expect lots of cards that will make your 60-card decks better.

Another great thing about Modern Horizons 2 is its big print run. That means that even though it’s a premium set, it’s still available for a reasonable price. And a whole Draft booster box has 36 boosters in it, unlike some Masters series with only 24.

Iconic Cards

Modern Horizons 2 has plenty of strong cards for different formats – mostly for Modern, but there are some good cards for Commander too, and of course for your kitchen table decks as well! There are so many good cards, that there’s no way we could list all of them here.

Best MTG Booster Box for D&D Fans: Forgotten Realms

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Draft Booster Box

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

The set is a very special one, since it’s the first time MTG paired with Dungeons and Dragons. There are cards that let you roll 20-sided dice, Class cards and more. The set has a bit lower power level, than some others, but it still contains plenty of fun and powerful cards.

We’d recommend this one for anyone who enjoys both Magic: the Gathering and D&D. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by various callbacks and references to this popular tabletop RPG.

MTG Japanese Themed Booster Box: Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

Kamigawa Neon Dynasty Best MTG Set Booster Box

Number of booster packs: 30 per box

If you’re a fan of either Japanese themes, or the original Kamigawa set, you’ll probably enjoy this MTG booster box. Neon Dynasty is a return to a popular Japanese themed plane of Kamigawa. It’s a bit different from the previous Kamigawa set, as it has more futuristic elements, and it’s happening 1200 years after the main set.

The booster box pictured above is a Set booster box, which has more exciting cards, if you aren’t planning to draft them. Of course, if you’d like to draft Kamigawa, you can always get a Draft booster box.

If you want the vanilla Magic experience, Core Sets are usually the way to go. The latest Core Set is Core 2021.

Core Sets don’t have very specific themes, which is great for both beginners and returning players. You’ll find cards that could improve your old decks. That’s especially true because it has some amazing reprints, which you can check in the Iconic Cards section.

You can also get a Collector booster, which features alternate art Ugin and more. You can check M21 Collector Booster contents here.

Zendikar Rising Booster Box

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

Zendikar Rising is the return to the world of Zendikar, which many Magic players enjoy very much. Everything in Zendikar is exciting – even something like lands, which matter a lot on Zendikar with mechanics like Landfall.

Zendikar Rising has many goodies. First, it has full art basic lands, which are gorgeous. Each booster contains one, so you’ll get a total of 36 per booster box. Additionally, each box comes with an Expedition – a powerful land with special new artwork.

Besides the regular Draft Booster Box, there are two other options with Zendikar Rising.

Set Boosters are new boosters that can contain up to 4 rares. They are great for players who just want to open their packs and don’t care about drafting. You can order Zendikar Rising Set Booster Box on Amazon.

Best Booster Box to Buy MTG Lotus Cobra

Finally, you have the option of buying Zendikar Rising Collector Box, which contains some really cool looking cards, plenty of foils and multiple rares and mythics, possibly with an alternate art – like the Lotus Cobra you saw above.

You can check its contents here and price here. It’ll usually contain not one, but two Expedition cards. (at least)

Best MTG Booster Box With Vampires: Crimson Vow

Crimson Vow Product List Draft Booster Box

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

If you’re a fan of the Vampire creature type, Crimson Vow is the right set for you. The set is all about a Vampire wedding, after all. Sorin’s dad Edgar, Charmed Groom is getting married to Olivia, Crimson Bride. Sorin is also there, although he’s not stoked about it.

Anyway, you can expect a lot of Vampires from this MTG booster box. Of course, there are also a lot of goodies for fans of other Innistrad tribes, such as Zombies and Werewolves. If you want to experience some true Gothic horror, this is an amazing set for you. Don’t forget that you’ll also get a Dracula card with your booster box, as a Box Topper.

MTG Booster Box with Big Creatures: Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths

Best Newest MTG Booster Box Ikoria Lair of Behemoths.jpg

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

If you like weird big creatures with weird creature types, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths is the right booster box one for you.

Ikoria is the world of big monsters. You have the cycle of Apex creatures, and a bunch of creatures with mutate. If you’re a fan of big creatures, Ikoria will prove to be a great set for you. Of course, you can also get Godzilla cards, but those are only available in Ikoria Collector Boosters.

Ikoria also features one of the most broken mechanics of all time – companion, which completely changed multiple formats from Standard to Legacy, and it had to be nerfed. You usually need just one companion for a specific deck, so you’ll be fine – even if you open just a single copy of a particular companion.

Highest Chance to Open a Planeswalker: War of the Spark

Best MTG Booster Box War of the Spark Planeswalker in Every Pack

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

Do you love planeswalker cards? Then you should definitely get War of the Spark booster box. This set was the Infinity War of Magic the Gathering, planeswalkers fighting against (or with, or avoiding) Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God.

For that reason, there’s a planeswalker in every War of the Spark booster. So yes, if you get a whole box, you’ll get a total of 36 planeswalkers, without counting the possibility of foil ones.

Each one of them has a passive ability. Narset, Parter of Veils for example, has a specially broken one.

Of course, not all of them are on a regular planeswalker power level. But even the uncommon ones are mostly interesting to build around – like Huatli, the Sun’s Heart.

Furthermore, planeswalkers aren’t the only good cards in the set, as you can see in the Iconic Cards section below.

Japanese War of the Spark Booster Box – Alternate Arts

Japanese War of the Spark booster box is a bit different from the English one. Yeah, cards are in a different language, no sh*t they’re different. Seriously, though – every Japanese booster pack has a 50% chance of planeswalker having an alternate anime art.

Wizards got some of the best Japanese artists to work on these cards, including Yoshitaka Amano, who worked on the Final Fantasy franchise. He created a brilliant art for Liliana, Dreadhorde General.

These are just some alternate arts, you can find all 36 of them here.

For Greek Mythology Fans: Theros Beyond Death

Theros-Beyond-Death-Booster-Box-MTG

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

This set was the return to Theros, the world of Greek myths and legends – with Magic’s own twists of course. If you’re a fun of those things, this set will definitely entertain you.

Theros Beyond Death is a nice set to draft. The games are fun and balanced – except when someone opens a broken mythic rare like Kiora Bests the Sea God. There is a strong enchantment theme in the set, alongside some graveyard synergies. You’ll find plenty of powerful cards in this set.

Best MTG Booster Box for Draft: Khans of Tarkir

Best MTG Booster Box Khans of Tarkir Drafting

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

Khans of Tarkir is a true gem for players who love to draft. There are five three-color combinations / clans:

  • Abzan (white-black-green)
  • Sultai (black-green-blue)
  • Temur (green-blue-red)
  • Jeskai (blue-red-white)
  • Mardu (red-white-black)

They are all viable to draft, alongside the infamous 5-color deck. Morph creatures give you something to do early on and late in the game. There are plenty of relevant decisions to make both during the draft and also during the matches.

You can expect a lot of powerful cards in the previously mentioned three color combinations. That’s not all, some of the most chased land cards in Magic, the fetch lands are also in the set!

Khans of Tarkir is probably our favorite booster box of all times. You can order one on Amazon.

Iconic Cards

Flooded Strand Best Booster Box Khans of Tarkir for Drafting

There might be a set that’s even better for drafting than Khans of Tarkir. It’s the original Innistrad. So why didn’t we put that in the title? Well, because it’s really pricey. It costs almost twice as much as the Khans booster box. You can check its price on Amazon. Anyway, it might be better for drafting than Tarkir, but it’s surely not twice as better.

Weirdest MTG Booster Box: Mystery Booster

Best MTG Booster Box Mystery

Cant decide which set to pick? Just pick a bit of everything with Mystery Boosters!

This set contains over 1,500 different Magic cards. Some with new frame, some with old frame (yes, the really old one). Cards from all over Magic’s history are in these. You can get some really strong cards in Mystery boosters, even on the uncommon slots.

So if you like surprises, Mystery Boosters seems like a great pickup. We wrote more about Mystery Boosters here.

Best MTG Booster Box for Multiplayer: Battlebond

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

Battlebond is a great set for everyone who likes any kind of multiplayer Magic variants. If you like multiplayer Commander, or casual 60-card multiplayer games, your decks will benefit greatly from a Battlebond booster box.

The set was created with the two-headed giant in mind. As such, it’s a great way to spend some quality game nights with your playgroup. For example, if you split a booster box with three friends, you can play a nice 2 vs 2 game with 9 boosters for each team – twice!

So if you like multiplayer Magic, Battlebond seems like the best MTG booster box for you.

Worst / Cheapest MTG Booster Box: Dragon’s Maze

Cheapest MTG Booster Box Dragons Maze

Number of booster packs: 36 per box

One of the worst booster boxes of all time is the Dragon’s Maze one. It’s really not a good set to draft, and it also doesn’t have many good cards. However, it’s one of the cheaper booster boxes, especially if you consider that’s been a while since it was released (way back in 2013). So, if you want the cheapest booster box, here’s one candidate, especially once you consider that older boxes usually go up in price. This one mostly stayed at the same price point.

However, we’d still recommend that you get one of the regular booster boxes – for more or less the same price you can get Throne of Eldraine, which is both a good set to draft and has tons of strong cards.

Dragon’s Maze is on the list just to warn you – don’t go for the absolute cheapest option, when picking the best MTG booster box.
